The UFC 147 main event fight between middleweight champion Anderson Silva and challenger Chael Sonnen has been moved from UFC 147 in Brazil to UFC 148 in Las Vegas.
UFC 147 was initially announced for June 23 at Joao Havelange Stadium (AKA Engenhao Stadium) in Rio. Unfortunately, the United Nations “Rio +20” meeting is also being held in Rio de Janeiro from June 20-22. This meeting prompted political pressure from local officials and would have also resulted in a lack of available hotel rooms for hosting such a large UFC stadium show.
The re-match will now take place in Las Vegas on July 7th, 2012 and was officially announced during a press conference held Tuesday.
Chael Sonnen delivered the most dominating performance against the champion Silva that we have seen. He was controlling the first four rounds before succumbing to a last-round triangle choke at UFC 117.
Sonnen advocates that he is the rightful champion of the middleweight division and on July 7th, he’ll be given the opportunity, once again, to take the belt away from Anderson Silva.
During Tuesday’s press conference, Dana White commented “I know Chael says some crazy shit, but he’s the only guy to challenge Anderson Silva since 2004. He backs up what he says.”
