BASEBALL — 25 February 2014

The Toronto Blue Jays Spring Training kicks off in Dunedin, Florida as they take on the Philadelphia Phillies in grapefruit league play. The consensus on the internet world is the Toronto Blue Jays off season was a lot like their record to finish the year… Terrible. With few moves made and little done to a pitching staff that fans feel needs improvement, Alex Anthopoulos is taking a lot of heat from Agent Scott Boras.

Boras had this to say about the city of Toronto and the Blue Jays ownership “There is no one who has the asset base of Rogers,” Boras said to Rosenthal. “[Toronto’s] a premium city. It’s a premium owner with equity. And it’s a very, very good team that with additional premium talent could become a contending team.” Boras is Agent to Ervin Santana who the Blue Jays weren’t willing to open up their bank account for, so one wonders the intentions behind the statements. Regardless of the willingness to spend money in the offseason the Toronto Blue Jays organization should only make the moves if they feel they are right.

You have such a critical window of years to win with the talent on the team and a few bad deals could put a strain on the long term success of this team. I am hopeful, unlike many seasoned Toronto Blue Jays fans who are gearing up for another disappointing year. I beleive we have a lot of talent and we do need to add some key pieces to improve the team but I hardly believe signing AJ Burnett or Ervin Santana are the difference. I would much rather take to the field with the current roster in place and pray to the baseball gods that this team can stay healthy. With all good teams come chemistry and the roster has had a huge overhaul in recent years. Let’s give the boys some time to gel and stay healthy and see what we can do.

Sometimes you have addition by subtraction, in this case removing J.P. Arencibia might be a bigger change to the Toronto Blue Jays roster then people are realizing. With the addition of Dioner Navarro behind the plate the calls might be a little different on which pitch to throw, when to throw it, where to throw etc. Dioner Navarro is a switch hitter which is always an asset in the MLB. Additionally the Toronto Blue Jays will also look to Kevin Seitzer as the new hitting coach for the team.

Here’s an interview with Blue Jays Manager John Gibbons about the upcoming season:

Obviously this is why the fans are in a fuss, a team that made a ton of moves last year and subsequently got worse. With nothing significant done to the roster to improve it, it’s no wonder the fans are upset with the appearance of the 2014 Toronto Blue Jays roster. Let’s just hope the Blue Jays pull a Boston Red Sox move and go from the worst in the division to winning the World Series.

Sometimes you don’t need to make a huge change, after all last season saw a ton of movement and we got worse. This season I think will be a long one for Blue Jays fans but if the team can find a way to turn it around, they might become the 132 Million dollar Cinderella story.
