Very rarely in sports are were reminded that at the end of the day, it’s just a game. The thing that may very well define an athlete is their ability to recognize that they are not necessarily defined by what they do for their sport, but the responsibilities they are willing to undertake away from it. With this noted, Ben Roethlisberger is an expectant father and a very proud one; so much in fact that he has stated clearly that under any circumstances would he be willing to miss the birth of child; even if it means skipping a game. He gave this very statement to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette;

I’m not missing the birth of my child. There’s no chance. I know some fans probably don’t want to hear that, but there’s no chance.

Though the exact birth date of his unborn son is unconfirmed, it is likely to occur during the middle of the season. The unconfirmed speculation according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, is that the birth is likely to occur around early December; this may not be the news most Steelers fans would want to hear, being that it falls into the same time frame of their game against their division rivals, the Baltimore Ravens. Despite this possibility, Ben is steadfast in his willingness to do what it takes to witness the birth of his child. What is more revealing about Ben Roethlisberger is his willingness to take on the challenges that comes with becoming a father.

When you’re going to be a father, all you think about is having this little baby, you don’t think about the registry, the room, the diapers, all the little things that go along with it. It’s exciting and it is a little bit scary, too. It is. Before long, you’re going to have this little life that you’re taking care of. But I’ve heard nothing but great things from people [about] just how it will change your life. I’m just so excited for that challenge.

The hope is that at some point every athlete is ready to make some type of sacrifice. One thing that can be said, an athletic career never last forever; thus the idea of building a strong family foundation to lean on is paramount. Perhaps this idea eluded Ben when he was younger, but as he acknowledged that with age, he has become more aware of what he needs to live a more fulfilling life.
