BASEBALL — 03 October 2012

We have been seeing more and more ‘anti texting and driving’ advertisements encouraging drivers to put down their technological devices when operating a motor vehicl, yet I have never seen an ad advising you not to text while biking.

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was involved in a bike accident near the Central Park reservoir in New York on Tuesday.

Valentine was reading a text message on his phone from Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox second basemen, while riding his bicycle in New York. When Valentine looked up, there were two umbrellas held by tourists walking in front of him. His bike skidded, he flew head over pedals and went down the hill by a road.

“I shouldn’t have been reading a text while I was riding, ” he said. “That’s the wrong thing to do. But at least I was wearing my helmet.”

No major injuries occurred, Valentine did sustain minor knee and hip injuries.
