BASKETBALL — 11 September 2014

So week 1 of Don’s Picks did not get off to a booming start but with that being said I did go 9 – 7 which in the NFL, gets you a wildcard spot and chance at the Superbowl. Now I know that in my last picks, I only picked five games but I did pick the remainder of the games via Facebook. This is how it went:

  • Seahawks: Win
  • Saints: Loss
  • Bengals: Win
  • Bears: Loss
  • Redskins: Loss
  • Chiefs: Loss
  • Patriots: Loss
  • Jets: Win
  • Eagles: Win
  • Steelers: Win
  • Vikings: Win
  • 49ers: Win
  • Buccaneers: Loss
  • Broncos: Win
  • Lions: Win
  • Chargers: Loss

Current Record: 9 – 7

So where did I go wrong, UPSETS!!! Who would have thought that the Bears would lose to the Bills, the Chiefs would lose to the Titans or that the Patriots would lose to the Dolphins? Seriously, anybody? Thats right, very few. With the other losses were some tough games and even in last weeks picks blog, I stated that there were some tough games to call.

Now lets move to Week 2, it doesn’t get much easier this week. This weeks match-ups have several games that have me undecided and frankly not wanting to pick at all because they’re just that close. Especially after some of last seasons worst teams, playing like they were playoff contenders last week. Im going to pick what I think are the 5 toughest games to pick and list the rest of my picks at the bottom of the blog. So with out further ado, lets do this!

Thursday Nighter:

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens

Dons Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers

This is one of the tougher games to call this week. Both defences are about the same statistically and both offences have limited options as legitimate threats. I think this game is going to come down to who runs the ball the best and the Steelers seem to be a little deeper at that position as Le’Veon Bell‘s 109 rushing yards last week were more than Ravens running backs Bernard Pierce and Justin Forsett combined as Pierce rushed for 17 yards and Forsett for 70 yards. Baltimore may also be sidetracked with the recent developments of Ray Rice as a lot of focus has been of the media attention rather than the football field. This should be a close one though as 9 out 10 regular season game between these two teams have been decided by three points or less.

Games:

Miami Dolphins vs Buffalo Bills

Dons Pick: Buffalo Bills

Some maybe looking at this game and wondering why I’m even mentioning this game. Thats because this game should be much better than people are giving it credit for. Both the Bills and Dolphins have stout defences and both had upsets against good teams last week. Ej Manuel should see a ton of pressure form the likes of Cameron Wake and which should help out the secondary as Manuel will be forced to rush his throws. Miami led heavily on their rushing attack last week as Knowshon Moreno rushed for 134 yards and 1 TD but don’t expect that same performance against the Bills front 7 with guys like Kyle Williams and Mario Williams. I think the key to this game will be the Bills one-two punch in CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson as I think the Bills will run a lot of screens off of a heavy pass rush from the Dolphins.

Atlanta Falcons vs Cincinnati Bengals

Dons Picks: Atlanta Falcons

This game is going to be a shoot-out folks. Both defences looked bad last week as they both sit at the about of the rankings systems with Atlanta (30th) and Cincinnati (28th) while allowing over 330 yards of passing. As this game should be about throwing Matt Ryan has his pick of fantasy studs to choose from as he has a healthy Julio Jones, Roddy White and Harry Douglas to throw to as all three have caught over 1000 yards in a season before. Andy Dalton has a constant Pro Bowler in AJ Green but doesn’t have the same amount of weapons. Look for a high scoring game with plenty of TD passes in this one.

Chicago Bears vs San Fransisco 49ers

Dons Pick: San Fransisco 49ers

Again another high scoring affair should be taking place in this game with one team focusing on the run and the other focusing on the pass. Both the Bears and 49ers defensively are on different ends of the spectrum as the 49ers are ranked in the bottom half of the league in pass defence (22nd) the Bears are one of the leagues worst in rush defence (30th) both of which, their opponents specialize in. Jay Cutler and the Bears have one of the leagues best passing threats with Alshon Jeffery, Brandon Marshall, Martellus Bennett and Matt Forte and should throw the ball around with ease as each of them caught a minimum of 70 yards last week. The 49ers have two running backs in Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde who each averaged over 4 yards per carry and a QB in Colin Kapernick who rushed for over 500 yards last season. I look for the 49ers to slow the game down with their rushing attack and this game to be very close until the 4th quarter when Cutler throws a crucial game losing interception.

Monday Nighter:

Philadelphia Eagles vs Indianapolis Colts

Dons Picks: Philadelphia Eagles

These teams are very close both offensively and defensively. This game will come down to who can run the ball the best and that seems to be the Colts only weakness as Trent Richardson has seemingly been a failed experiment for the team. The Eagles however have LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles. I see a repeat of last weeks game with the colts as they were forced to make an incredible comeback in the second half only to come up short late in the 4th. I look for the Eagles to have the lead in 4th and use their rushing attack to run out enough of the clock to kill another Andrew Luck comeback.

Heres the best of the rest:

  • Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers – Dons Pick: Carolina Panthers
  • Kansas City Chiefs vs Denver Broncos – Dons Pick: Denver Broncos
  • New Orleans Saints vs Cleveland Browns – Dons Pick: New Orleans Saints
  • New England Patriots vs Minnesota Vikings – Dons Pick: New England Patriots
  • Arizona Cardinals vs New York Giants – Dons Pick: Arizona Cardinals
  • Dallas Cowboys vs Tennessee Titans – Dons Pick: Tennessee Titans
  • Jacksonville Jaguars vs Washington Redskins – Dons Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars UPSET PICK OF THE WEEK
  • Seattle Seahawks vs San Diego Chargers – Dons Pick: Seattle Seahawks
  • St Louis Rams vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Dons Pick: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • New York Jets vs Green Bay Packers – Dons Pick: Green Bay Packers
  • Houston Texans vs Oakland Raiders – Dons Pick: Houston Texans
