FOOTBALL — 18 January 2015

Welcome to another edition of Don’s Weekly Pick’s: NFL Conference Championships. So with another Playoff weekend upon us, its time for another week of NFL predictions. As always, Im going to start with a recap of the previous weeks Don’s Weekly Pick’s: NFL Divisional Playoff Round and last week went just as well as the week before as I went 2-2. So where did I go wrong? Well, for starters I picked the Denver Broncos to beat the Indianapolis Colts at home in Denver. We later found out that Peyton Manning had been playing with a torn quadricep over the past month so had he been healthy, the game may have actually ended quite differently. I than picked the Dallas Cowboys to beat the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau as I thought the injured calf of Rodgers would be a bigger factor than it was. Had the Cowboys actually blitzed Rodgers to force him to try and move with that injured calf, the Cowboys may have actually shut down the Packers offence. So, lets recap!

Playoff Record: 4-4

  • New England Patriots: Win
  • Denver Broncos: Loss
  • Dallas Cowboys: Loss
  • Seattle Seahawks: Win

So, lets talk Don’s Weekly Pick’s: NFL Conference Championships! This weekends games actually have some very interesting story lines. The last time the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers played, Aaron Rodgers was clearly afraid to throw in the direction of Richard Sherman. That lead to a defensive showcase for the Seahawks as they dismantled the Packers in the opening week of the season. In the AFC game we have the young blood, Andrew Luck taking on the old veteran, Tom Brady. The Indianapolis Colts are looking to push the legacy of their young quarterback and stifle the legacy of their opponents quarterback, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots. So, lets get started!

NFC Championship

Green Bay Packers vs Seattle Seahawks

Dons Pick: Seattle Seahawks

This is actually a pretty easy pick for me as I really do believe the key to this game will be Aaron Rodgers injured calf. Now, I know I said this last week against Dallas but it was quite clear that Rodgers movement was limited. The Cowboys hardly blitzed the quarterback and ultimately allowed him to throw the ball all over their weak secondary. The Seahawks won’t allow this to happen to them. I expect the Seahawks to send a lot of blitzes the Packers way and for their secondary to take advantage of Aaron Rodgers mis-throws. The Packers defence have been suspect all season and the Seahawks are clicking on all cylinders offensively, so I look for Seattle to move the ball all over Green Bay. Look for another blow out for Seattle at home and another Super Bowl appearance.

AFC Championship

Indianapolis Colts vs New England Patriots

Dons Pick: New England Patriots

This is going to be the game to watch this Sunday as either of these teams could walk away with a win and I wouldn’t be surprised either way. Andrew Luck is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL right now and carries this team on his shoulders. Thats why I’m picking the Patriots though because they have the better team. Yes they have Tom Brady but they also have a solid defence and a combination of weapons offensively, including the best tight end in the game, Rob Gronkowski. If you didn’t believe the Patriots were legit before than last weekend against the Ravens, they left no doubt as they came from behind twice in that game to win. Look for a closely contested game with the Patriots coming out on top and making their 6th Super Bowl appearance.
