Welcome back to another week of Dons Picks! This past week was definitely rough as I went 4-9 (ouch) and lost on close games, unbelievable upsets and some gut picks that just simply did not pan out. So where did I go wrong? Well, where do I start? First of all, I picked the Redskins (led by a back-up QB on a hot streak) over the Giants, who have played mediocre to say the least but came out Thursday and absolutely “LIT UP” Washington. I than decided to take the Bears to beat the Packers, despite a history of losing to the Cheesehead’s but based on the stats and a “gut” feeling, I missed HUGE on this one. The games that surprised everyone besides Cowboys and Chiefs fans, were the defeat of the Saints by Big D and the Patriots getting “BLOWN OUT” in Arrowhead. Oh and the Vikings, with out Adrian Peterson and with a rookie QB, beats up on the offensive powerhouse in the Falcons? WHAT? SERIOUSLY? OUTRAGEOUS!!! I than missed on the Jets over my Lions (Ill gladly take that lump, GO LIONS!!) and the Bills over the Texans (seriously, who are the Texans … Im so confused!). So lets recap:
Current Record: 33-28
- Washington Redskins: Loss
- Chicago Bears: Loss
- Philadelphia Eagles: Loss
- New Orleans Saints: Loss
- New England Patriots: Loss
- Buffalo Bills: Loss
- Indianapolis Colts: Win
- Baltimore Ravens: Win
- New York Jets: Loss
- Pittsburgh Steelers: Loss
- Miami Dolphins: Win
- San Diego Chargers: Win
- Atlanta Falcons: Loss
So lets talk Week 5! So the good news is there are some interesting match-ups and some good games this week. The bad news is the picks are even more confusing than ever with recent developments in the NFL scoreboards. The Thursday Night’er is a divisional match-up that prior to Week 4, I would have easily gone with the Packers over the Vikings but with the impressive performance of the Vikings, this game will be much better than previously thought. We get to see a great battle of offence against defence as the Broncos play at home against the Cardinals and on the Monday Night’er has the Seahawks battling the recently defeated Redskins. So, lets give it a go!
Thursday Night Football: Minnesota Vikings vs Green Bay Packers
Dons Pick: Green Bay Packers
This game should be better than previously assumed but I still can’t pick a Vikings team without Adrian Peterson and an injured Teddy Bridgewater over the healthy Green Bay Packers. Teddy Bridgewater has played well over a game and a half completing 31/50 for 467 yards but has yet to throw a TD. The Vikings have a decent rushing attack despite the loss of Peterson, rushing for 300+ yards and 5 TD’s. The Packers have had trouble running the ball as Eddie Lacy has only ran for 161 yards and just 1 TD but the Cheesehead faithful have had Aaron Rodgers to lean on as he’s completed 86/130 for 999 yards with 9 TD’s and 1 INT. Rodgers has had a little help though as Jordy Nelson has caught 459 yards and 3 TD’s while Randall Cobb has received 239 yards and 5 TD’s. Look for the Packers to take this game and Aaron Rodgers to blow up at home.
Houston Texans vs Dallas Cowboys
Dons Pick: Dallas Cowboys
Houston and Dallas are both 3-1 but I just cannot help but like the Cowboys after what I saw against the Saints. Big D is playing on top of their game in the past three weeks and Jason Garrett has finally seemed to have learned his lesson, not to continually rely on the arm of Tony Romo and work your Probowl caliber RB, DeMarco Murray. Murray could be, if not, SHOULD BE a candidate for MVP at this point as he leads the league in rushing with 534 yards. The Cowboys will have a tough go against a solid Texans defence but with the way their defence has played recently (shutting down the powerhouse Saints), the Texans shouldn’t be too much to handle offensively as long as they can stop the run. Look for the Cowboys to take a close victory at home, much to the pleasure of the fans of Big D (I’m looking at you Lamar!).
Buffalo Bills vs Detroit Lions
Dons Pick: Detroit Lions
Well, I picked against my boys last week and it bit me in the butt. So I can’t pick against them this week. Especially with a rusty Kyle Orton coming off the bench combined with a non existent pre-season, Orton should have a tough day against my Lions defence. The brunt of the Bills offence has come from the run but the Lions have held their opponents to an average of 80 yards and 2 total TD’s per game. The Bills defence has been solid against the run but have given up passing yards like its their jobs, as they have given up an average of 266 yards per game. That stat alone doesn’t bode well for the Bills as they face a pass happy team with a QB, who has one of the strongest arms in the NFL with Matthew Stafford and arguably the best receiver in football with Calvin Johnson. Look for the Lions to win in similar fashion as the Chargers did against the Bills in Week 3, as the Lions take a victory at home. GO LIONS!!!
Baltimore Ravens vs Indianapolis Colts
Dons Pick: Indianapolis Colts
This is actually a very tough game to pick. Ive gotta go with the Colts though as their at home and I just simply think, they’re the better team. The Ravens have been on fire with Steve Smith Sr as he’s caught 429 yards and 3 TD’s but the rest of the receiving care only have just over 100 yards each over four games. The Ravens defence has been decent against the run but have given up 1041 passing yards. The Colts are a passing dominant team as Andrew Luck has completed 115/167 for 1305 yards with 13 TD’s and 4 INT’s. The Colts have found themselves in shootouts against stronger teams during the first two weeks of the season but have been absolutely dominate the past two games. I like the Ravens but they have been very inconsistent for a 3-1 team who have not faced the most elite of teams beside the Bengals in Week 1. Look for the Colts to win a shootout in the fourth quarter at home.
Arizona Cardinals vs Denver Broncos
Dons Pick: Denver Broncos
Im a big fan of the Cardinals and both Carson Palmer & Drew Stanton but along with my good friend Blake Civic, Im also a HUGE Peyton Manning fan (Blake Civic is actually a HUGE Broncos fan, as I am simply a fan of the Sheriff). The Cardinals are winning games the way football is meant to be played, hard nosed offence and defence but the Broncos are simply just on another level. Peyton Manning has completed 74/111 for 814 yards with 8 TD’s and only 1 INT over 3 games, its also to be said that the teams Manning has faced are the top teams in the NFL with the Colts, Chiefs and Seahawks. The Sheriff, Peyton Manning has had help from new receiver Emmanuel Sanders as he’s had 25 receptions for 334 yards and has been absolutely electric. Montee Ball hasn’t quite produced the way they had hoped but as I stated before, they were facing the upper echelon of teams in the NFL. The Cardinals haven’t been a stand out offensive unit but have 1000+ yards of total offence and 6 TD’s over 3 games. Look for the Broncos to take a close victory at home.
