FOOTBALL — 24 October 2014

Welcome to another addition of Don’s Weekly Pick’s: Week 8! Last week was another successful run as I went 10-5. So, where did I go wrong? Well, I missed on a couple of upsets in St Louis and Jacksonville as the Seahawks were beat by the Rams (RIDICULOUS!!!) and the Browns were beat by the Jaguars (the Browns should seriously be ashamed of themselves as the Jaguars are possibly the worst team in all of football). I than missed on picking the Bears to beat the Dolphins, the Chargers to beat the Chiefs and the Texans to beat the Steelers as every single one of these teams (with the exception of the Chargers, Rivers is pretty money!) struggle to find their identities as contenders or pretenders in their respective conferences. So let’s recap:

Current Record: 65-40-1

  • Indianapolis Colts: Win
  • Chicago Bears: Loss
  • Detroit Lions: Win
  • San Diego Chargers: Loss
  • Denver Broncos: Win
  • New England Patriots: Win
  • Baltimore Ravens: Win
  • Washington Redskins: Win
  • Seattle Seahawks: Loss
  • Cleveland Browns: Loss
  • Buffalo Bills: Win
  • Green Bay Packers: Win
  • Arizona Cardinals: Win
  • Dallas Cowboys: Win
  • Houston Texans: Loss

So lets talk Don’s Weekly Pick’s: Week 8! There are a number of interesting games this week that range of top shelf, grade A, quality teams to some Walmart, lower level teams but come with great deals. A few of the higher end games that should include some great football are Ravens vs Bengals and Eagles vs Cardinals. While some of the lower end games that should still produce some surprisingly good games are Lions vs Falcons, Packers vs Saints and Rams vs Chiefs. So, let’s give it a go!

St Louis Rams vs Kansas City Chiefs

Dons Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

Now, I know the Rams just beat the Seattle Seahawks and not only did they beat them but they looked impressive doing so. The problem is that the Rams pulled out all of the stops against the Seahawks and typically play Seattle well as they’re divisional opponents. So don’t expect the same type of play out of the Rams against the Chiefs this week. The Rams have played surprisingly well this season despite losing Sam Bradford to injury in pre-season and Austin Davis has really stepped up in the relief role but they just haven’t been able to come out on top in most of these high scoring games they’ve been in. The Chiefs have been wildly inconsistent this season as they’ve lost to the Titans, Broncos and 49ers but have also beaten the likes of the Dolphins, Patriots and Chargers. This game should be close as both teams can put up points and play good defence but look for the Chiefs to run the ball and control the clock better and come out at home with a win.

Detroit Lions vs Atlanta Falcons

Dons Pick: Detroit Lions

The Lions haven’t been the offensive powerhouse we’ve come to expect in recent years but their defence is playing out of their minds as they are the number 1 ranked defence in the NFL. The Falcons have put up points but have the 30th ranked defence in league and haven’t been able to out score their opponents with the exception of the Saints and Buccaneers early in the season. They cant run the ball what so ever and have even struggled to throw despite having a couple of studs at receiver in Julio Jones and Roddy White. Look for the Lions to take home a win in London, England this week and to do so decisively.

Green Bay Packers vs New Orleans Saints

Dons Pick: Green Bay Packers

Statistically this match-up should go to New Orleans but the Saints just have not had what it takes to finish games this season in the 4th quarter as they sit at 2-5. The Green Bay Packers have been spectacular offensively despite being ranked 25th as they rank 4th in average points scored (28.4). Aaron Rodgers has been a bad man this season as he’s completed 141/211 for 1674 yards and 18 TD’s with just 1 INT (absolutely phenomenal!!). Look for a high scoring game with alot of passing with two of the best QB’s in the league in Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees tossing the pigskin around like its their jobs (get it? … it is their jobs … where’s my friend Robin when I need her?) as the Packers take home a win on the road.

Baltimore Ravens vs Cincinnati Bengals

Dons Pick: Baltimore Ravens

Simply put, the Ravens are the better team. The Bengals started the season strong but have essentially fallen of the grid as late. The Ravens have flourished with the addition of Steve Smith Sr, who has become their number threat in the air and have pounded the rock with the best of them despite letting go of Ray Rice. The Bengals offence has been on par with previous season as they rank 15th in the league but what thought early in the season to be one of the best defensive units in the league is now one of the worst as they rank 31st. This should be a close game until the 4th quarter come around when the Joe Flacco hits Steve Smith Sr for a couple of TD’s. Look for the Ravens to pull out of Cincinnati with a win.

Philadelphia Eagles vs Arizona Cardinals

Dons Pick: Philadelphia Eagles

This one is tough for me as I’m a big fan of Carson Palmer and what the Cardinals defence led by Patrick Peterson can do but the Eagles are simply just too explosive and have too many weapons they can beat you with to pick against. Believe me, I have both LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles on my fantasy team and they are killing it for me! This will be a closely contested game with great defence from both teams but I think the screen game of the Eagles will be the deciding factor in the one. Look for an Eagles win on the road in Arizona.

  • Minnesota Vikings vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Dons Pick: Minnesota Vikings
  • Buffalo Bills vs New York Jets – Dons Pick: New York Jets
  • Chicago Bears vs New England Patriots – Dons Pick: New England Patriots
  • Seattle Seahawks vs Carolina Panthers – Dons Pick: Seattle Seahawks
  • Miami Dolphins vs Jacksonville Jaguars – Dons Pick: Miami Dolphins (thats for you miss Britany Kruter)
  • Houston Texans vs Tennessee Titans – Dons Pick: Houston Texans
  • Indianapolis Colts vs Pittsburgh Steelers – Dons Pick: Indianapolis Colts
  • Oakland Raiders vs Cleveland Browns – Dons Pick: Cleveland Browns (reluctantly)
