Ex-Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky received a 30-60 year sentence today on 45 counts of child sex abuse charges.
Last night, from prison, Sandusky adamantly defended his innocence. Today, he again claimed his innocence, but he is still going to prison for a very long time, for the rest of his life essentially.
He arrived at court dressed in a red jumpsuit, handcuffed, wearing a bullet proof vest underneath and was accompanied by the sheriff’s deputies into the courthouse.
Here is his arrival to the courthouse:
Sandusky had the last word at his hearing. The order of speakers was as follows: prosecution, defense, victims, followed by Sandusky himself.
In his statement released from prison last night, Sandusky said, “They can take away my life, they can make me out as a monster, they can treat me as a monster, but they can’t take away my heart. In my heart, I know I did not do these alleged disgusting acts.” He reportedly talked for 15 minutes during his sentencing, and reiterated the same statement in court.
He continued to say, “My wife has been my only sex partner, and that was after marriage. Our love continues.”
Sandusky himself is now at a very high risk to be sexually assaulted while in prison. Sex offenders are roughly two to four times more likely than other inmates to fall victim to sexual abuse or rape while behind bars.
Jerry Sandusky will undergo multiple evaluations which will take a couple of weeks to determine his mental and physical health, education level and any treatment needs.
