One would have to wonder if anyone could take Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos words as bond anymore, as he repeatedly insisted Farrell would be back next season to finish out the final season of his three-year contract. But the move that was made yesterday to send former Blue Jays Manager John Farrell back to Boston in exchange for for second baseman Mike Aviles, now opens the door for a new manager. With this move also comes the potential of either moving another player or cash; the player suggested that would go to the Red Sox would be second baseman Kelly Johnson. With the departure of John Farrell now presents the question, who will take over as Toronto Blue Jays’ GM next season? Well Omar Visquel was very vocal with his criticism of the coaching staff, noting that they were too lenient; as position that many fans including myself agrees with. The names at this point that has been present at possibly candidates have been Baltimore Orioles bench coach DeMarlo Hale, third base coach and infield instructor Brian Butterfield, and Cleveland Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr; all noted candidates were beat out for the Manager position by John Farrell two years ago. The expectation for the next GM for the Blue Jays, is one that will present veteran leadership, and one that will put this team in line to perform at a high level every night with not exceptions. So I believe it is in Alex’s best interest not to rush in picking his next Manager and choose the candidate that will turn this team into a winning franchise again.
