Last night the Toronto Raptors got another game together under the belt. You were able to see a lot of positives and negatives on the court. A lot of the negatives have to do with rust and lack of time to develop the right chemistry. The Toronto Raptors will have an exciting look this season with three quality point guards, something the Raptors have lacked. With this much depth at point guard it provides Raptors fans assurance down the 82 game schedule should Jose Calderon, Kyle Lowry or John Lucas III get injured.
Last night Jose Calderon put up 12 Points, 8 Assists, 2 Rebounds, 2 Steals in just over 23 Minutes of play. We also saw solid numbers in the debut of Kyle Lowry, as he scored 14 points, 6 assists, 3 steals and more importantly was 6/6 from the free throw line as he was aggressive on the court and drew fouls. An attacking point guard with scoring ability is something the Toronto Raptors has lost since TJ Ford. The dynamics of what both Jose Calderon and Kyle Lowry offer coach Dwayne Casey this season is going to be good for everyone else on the team. I feel with those two running the team players will be able to excel in a system that has solid ball handlers. Throw in the addition of Landry Fields who has had a solid impact on the team and is the type of player who makes the right move on the floor to get open.
The development of players like Jonas Valanciunas are going to be important to the Toronto Raptors success this season. If Demar DeRozan can have a consistent season and stay healthy I believe the Raptors are a franchise headed in a positive direction and start to get away from the bottom of the Eastern Division. Toronto fans have to be patient as this young team will have nights where they get blown out, but they will have equal amount of nights where they surprise you and walk away with the victory. Effort on a consistent basis is what you can expect to see from these players, as they give it all night in and night out. If one player on the team isn’t willing to give… well their are plenty of players in every position just waiting for minutes to step up. The competition on the team will only allow everyone to develop into better NBA players.
Watch Jonas Valanciunas put on the moves with a patient pump fake before he decides to make his first NBA poster.
