Their hopes to win a title were fading by the minute as Manchester City were trailing 2-1 against Queens Park Rangers after 90 minutes.
In extra time, Edin Dzeko and Sergio Anuero both scored to clinch a 3-2 victory that secured the first victory for Manchester City since 1968. What made it sweeter, they beat out cross-town rival Manchester United on goal difference.
“It’s a crazy finish for a crazy season,” Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini said. “I’ve never seen a final like this”
Throughout the season the balance of title race has shifted back and forth between the Manchester clubs numerous times. While Manchester City was down 2-1 to QPR things were looking good for Manchester United who had just defeated Sunderland 1-0.
After winning, United were waiting eagerly, ready to start celebrating title number 20; just waiting for the final result of the City game.
Instead, for the first time in 44 years; Manchester fans flooded the City pitch and exploded blue smoke canisters in celebration.
In the 44 years City has been without a title, United has won 19. Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour has invested more than $1 billion into the club over three years in hopes to build a powerhouse.
“It was really important to start winning this championship,” City manager Roberto Mancini said. “Manchester City can have a big future now.”
This is the first time the English title was decided in such dramatic circumstances since 1989, when Arsenal and Liverpool finished level on points, and had the same goal difference so the Gunners ended up winning the title based on total goals scored.
Here is the moment that Manchester United found out they lost to Manchester City, followed by footage of Manchester City’s celebration:
