What will likely be considered the most unusual story of 2013, involves All-American linebacker Manti Te’o. In September 2012, the entire nation was inspired by the story of Te’o girlfriend Lennay Kekua death. It was a loss that motivated Te’o and help lead his Notre Dame team all the way to the BCS championship. Reports have now surfaced that the Heisman Trophy finalist was the victim of a hoax according to his own university.
The belief according to Notre Dame, is that Te’o was bamboozled into an online relationship with a woman whose subsequent death from leukemia was fabricated by the perpetrators of the hoax. This claim was made following a story published by the website Deadspin.com, detailing that no record of Lennay Kekua existence was found. Furthermore, the website suggests not only was Te’o aware of the hoax, he may have been the author of it; without question a stunning allegation made against an All-American athlete beloved and admired by the entire nation.
In response to these claims, Te’o made the following statement:
This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online, we maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.”
Without question this will be a story to follow for the rest of the 2013, as it is the belief that new twists and new characters involved in this conspiracy will surface at some point.
