In 1995, hall of fame receiver Jerry Rice set a standard for receiving yards in a season, that many believed would never be broken, until last night. With his reception at 2:57 left in the game, Calvin Johnson caught a 26-yard pass from quarterback Drew Stafford which gave sole possession of the single season receiving yards record. In total, Johnson now has 1,892 receiving yards for the year and is on pace to get over 2,000 receiving yards for the year. Setting a new standard for receiving yards by a wide receiver. Despite the disappointing season his Detroit Lions have had this year, he has been their lone bright spot. Perhaps with this outcome, this season may be the catalyst needed to address the problem that is plaguing this team; that being that Johnson simply does not have adequate help. One can only assume that Johnson despite his superior skill, will not be able to produce 1,800 yard season every year to compensate for a team that little to no other options on offense. In reality, this great accomplishment does not compensate for the Lions’ losing season and perhaps will prompt this franchise to make the moves necessary to not only give Johnson the help he needs; but to turn this Lions franchise into a winning organization once again.
