Women’s MMA took yet another leap forward with a classic dominating performance by Ronda Rousey.
The Strikeforce champion faced Canadian Sarah Kaufman and defeated her in just 54 seconds with the same move she’s used to finish every single opponent in her professional career – an armbar.
“Ronda put on a great performance. I’m embarrassed by my performance,” Sarah Kaufman told Showtime Sports following the fight. “She got the armbar, I defended it. She got it again, I defended it. She got it again, and I couldn’t stop it.”
“I’m really disappointed. I wanted to land some quality strikes, but it didn’t happen tonight.”
Rousey came out looking to strike. She pressed Kaufman against the cage quickly, then forced an easy takedown where she relied on her favourite finishing move to defeat Kaufmann.
Ronda Rousy attempted the armbar twice before having success on her third attempt. Rousey has finished six professional and three amateur opponents by armbar.
Following the fight, Rousey called out former Strikeforce champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, who is currently serving a suspension for a positive drug test.
“I need to send out a challenge to Ms. Cyborg: I’m the champion and you should come down to 135 and let’s settle this,” Rousey said.
Santos had been reluctant in the past to drop down to 135 pounds to face Sarah Kaufman. Will she make the drop to face Rousey?
