FOOTBALL — 17 May 2012

Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints had the franchise tag placed on him, meaning he won’t be playing anywhere other than New Orleans next season. Brees said during a radio interview Wednesday that he is frustrated by the lack of communication on the part of the Saints. He feels they should instill more urgency to get a long-term deal done.

“It’s been extremely frustrating for me. I don’t think the negotiations should have been this difficult,” Brees said on WWL radio in New Orleans. “What’s been a little frustrating on my end, or disappointing, is the lack of communication. We’ve reached out on quite a few occasions and at times I know I’ve been frustrated with the lack of response.”

Brees did mention that he would like to return to the team as soon as possible, however; he did raise the possibility of missing minicamp or even training camp if a suitable deal is not reached.

Brees has already missed several weeks of voluntary off-season training with the club. Organized team activities begin next week.

Let’s face it, the Saints bounty investigation and resulting punishments have likely been a major distraction to the top level decision makers. Brees understands that amongst all the madness the team still needs to be moving forward. He is frustrated with the pace the organization is moving at.

“There should be a sense of urgency and it just seems like there’s not,” Brees said.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis stated last month that he has never worked on a more important deal then this extension for Brees, and that he would like to come up with a deal which pleases his star quarterback.

Aware of his frustrations, highlighted by media, expect New Orleans to organize some time in the very near future to ensure Brees is satisfied.

The most important thing for the Saints should be getting their team ready for a new season. Locking up Brees’ deal and getting him out there on the field with his teammates should be a top priority.
