HOCKEY — 13 April 2012

Already in the first round of the 2012 NHL PLAYOFFS it is clear to see why the shoot out is nowhere near as exciting as the sudden death, edge of your seat thrilling action you get with OVERTIME! Sure overtime doesn’t guarantee you excitement. What it does give you is a clear winner. If you got 1/2 a win for losing in over-time in the playoffs it wouldn’t make much sense. Yet the NHL continues to use a stale format that lacks consistency in the standings.

Lets take a look at the teams currently in the playoffs and the teams playing golf.

EAST POINTS OTL WEST POINTS OTL
New York Rangers 109 7 Vancouver 111 9
Boston 102 4 St. Louis 109 11
Florida 94 18 Phoenix 97 13
Pittsburgh 108 6 Nashville 104 8
Philadelphia 103 9 Detroit 102 6
New Jersey 102 6 Chicago 101 11
Washington 92 8 San Jose 96 10
Ottawa 92 10 Los Angeles 95 15
 ————–  ———-  —  ————-  ———-  —
Buffalo 89 11 Calgary 90 16
Tampa Bay 84 8 Dallas 89 5
Winnipeg 84 10 Colorado 88 6
Carolina 82 16 Minnesota 81 11
Toronto 80 10 Anaheim 80 12
New York Islanders 79 11 Edmonton 74 10
Montreal 78 16 Columbus 65 7

Now if we were only considering a WIN (2 Points) and LOSS (0 Points) This is what the standings would look like.

EAST POINTS WEST POINTS
New York Rangers 102 Vancouver 102
Boston 98 St. Louis 98
Washington 84 San Jose 86
Pittsburgh 102 Nashville 96
New Jersey 96 Detroit 96
Philadelphia 94 Chicago 90
Ottawa 82 Dallas 84
Buffalo 78 Phoenix 84
————— ————— ————— —————
Florida 76 Colorado 82
Tampa Bay 76 Los Angeles 80
Winnipeg 74 Calgary 74
Toronto 70 Minnesota 70
New York Islanders 68 Anaheim 68
Carolina 66 Edmonton 64
Montreal 62 Columbus 58

What are your thoughts? Obviously if your a Buffalo Fan or a Dallas Fan but if you’re cheering for Los Angeles or Florida you probably like it the way it is. I truly believe it provides a clearer picture and proper structure to the standings to show how truly good a team is. After all hanging on an extra period and being rewarded isn’t the way to decide the playoffs. Especially when most of these points are won and lost in shoot outs. Let the teams go into OT, Double, Triple for I care. That’s what helps make sports special when two teams are battling to get the victory knowing only one team can succeed. That’s what brings out the best in the players and these lazy shootouts aren’t doing anything but giving these players false hope and a chance to say “Oh well I tried”.

Overtime is a good thing. Just make sure the arena has a policy that keeps the beer concessions open.
