In the wake of Mike Brown’s dismissal as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers , two candidates to fill his vacant position have surfaced; former Lakers and Bulls coach Phil Jackson, and former Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni . Reports have shown at this points they are both neck and neck, yet many are already favoring Phil Jackson as the inevitable choice, as he had previous coached Kobe Bryant and his Lakers to 5 NBA Championships. However, for Phil Jackson there are factors that could affect the decision making in this process. The first being his health, which was one of the reasons he walked away from the game after the 2010-11 season. Secondly, the fact that many have noted Phil Jackson being very comfortable with retirement.
On the contrary, many have said that Phil Jackson still has the fire to coach, especially considering that he walked away after being swept in the second round of the playoffs by the Dallas Mavericks
With Mike D’Antoni there are also health concerns as it was reported that he had knee replacement surgery and will be sidelined up to six weeks; however, it was noted that he is expected to be available to coach within 10 days to two weeks, if he were to be hired by the Lakers. Many have said Mike D’Antoni would be the better candidate as he would be the one to make the team more competitive. More to the point comes the idea of implementing the famous Triangle offense, which many have said that both Dwight Howard and Steve Nash, many not adapt well to this type of offense.
With all the questions and complications at this point, whomever takes over this Lakers team will likely have a tall task ahead of initiating organizing and finding the chemistry on this team that is missing.
